Most towns can’t say they inspired a Johnny Cash song, but Starkville can.
On May 11, 1965, Johnny Cash was arrested in Starkville after a performance on campus, creating one of the most memorable stories in country music history.
As the story goes, Cash joked that he spent the night in jail “for picking flowers.”

What might have been just another strange tour story eventually became inspiration for his song “Starkville City Jail.”
A few years later, during his famous live performance at San Quentin Prison, Cash shared the story with the crowd before performing the song. In true Johnny Cash fashion, he told it with humor, charm, and just enough attitude to make the audience love every second of it.

The song turned one unusual night in Starkville into a lasting piece of country music history.
Today, the story is still part of what makes Starkville special. A Mississippi Country Music Trail marker now stands commemorating the arrest location and the song it inspired. It has become one of those local stories that residents love to share and visitors are always surprised to hear.
There is something fitting about Johnny Cash finding inspiration in a Mississippi’s College Town. Starkville has always had a way of leaving an impression on people, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.
Nearly sixty years later, the story still makes people smile, and in addition to the marker, Cash’s mugshot is memorialized on a mural on Lafayette Street.
