Just across campus, we find the Cotton District—a vibrant, colorful neighborhood known for its incredible architecture, lively atmosphere, and a personality unlike anywhere else in Mississippi.
Creation of the Cotton District
Back in the late 1960s, Dan Camp designed the Cotton District, making it one of the very first new urbanist developments in the entire United States. What he created was so much more than just a neighborhood—it was a true vision for how community, design, and daily life could come together in one seamless, beautiful place.
This half-mile walk through downtown is always bustling and packed with gorgeous sights. No matter the season, the Cotton District draws us in with its unique charm and vibrant energy. And honestly, once you’re here, it’s easy to see why! With a thoughtful mix of residential spaces, local retail, and delicious dining options woven together along tree-lined streets, it is easily one of Starkville’s most popular nightlife destinations.
