Johnny Cash, known as “The Man in Black,” is one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has sold 90 million records worldwide, including country, rock, blues, folk and gospel.
In the early morning hours of May 11, 1965, Cash was arrested for public drunkenness after he was found picking flowers at a then-private residence after a show at Mississippi State University. He spent the night at the Oktibbeha County Jail and later wrote the song, “Starkville City Jail.” He performed the song for inmates at San Quentin Jail in 1969, and it was included on the album, “Live at San Quentin.”
The Mississippi Country Music Trail marker is located at the corner of Mississippi 182 and Jackson Street.
The Marker was unveiled in Starkville on May 14, 2021. Country Music Legend Marty Stuart played at the event.
